‘Frozen 2’ Release Date, Cast & Trailer: Plot Will be Darker? [Rumors]

Disney is still keeping mum on whether or not a "Frozen 2" film is in the works, but rumors have it that if a sequel was coming, Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff are still set to return in a movie that will take a darker turn compared to its predecessor, Master Herald reported.

Fascination and anticipation is running high for a sequel to the successful 2013 film "Frozen," which was awarded the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and in the absence of official news, rumors and speculations are circulating online about the cast, crew, the plot and the possible release date.

Rumors have it that the characters from the previous movie will return, specifically sisters Elsa and Anna, voiced by Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, respectively; Olaf, voiced by Josh Gad; and Kristoff, voiced by Jonathan Groff. However, there is no official news if the original voice actors will be asked to come back for the sequel.

When it comes to the storyline though, numerous reports from the likes of Movie Pilot, Ecumenical News, Enstarz and more have speculated that the movie may have a darker storyline, one based on the original "Snow Queen" story written by Hans Christian Andersen.

Andersen's original story, considered one of the highly-acclaimed fairy tales of all time, tells the story of an evil troll who had a magic mirror which distorts the reflection of those who stood in front of it and makes everyone see bad and ugly things. One day, the mirror shattered into tiny pieces, scattering the grains and getting into people's eyes. Eventually people were seeing only the bad and ugly things in the world.

The titular Snow Queen of the fairy tale spirits away a boy named Kai and makes him her captive. Should he solve a puzzle, he will be freed, but if he fails, he will have to stay in her Palace forever. Kai gets rescued by his true love Gerda, who ended up getting brainwashed and kidnapped twice before he outsmarted the Snow Queen and frees Kai.

For a movie geared to the younger crowd, an adaptation of the original tale would be pretty intense and gritty, but might have the potential to work given careful planning, according to Movie Pilot.

With limited news and almost no hints of the possible sequel's rumored plot, there is also no clue as to a possible release date for the film, especially in the face of Disney's upcoming movies.

In 2015 alone, they have "Inside Out," "The Good Dinosaur," and "Star Wars: Episode VII." Disney will also release two films with Marvel, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man."

In 2016, they will release "Finding Dory" and Marvel movies "Captain America 3" and "Doctor Strange." Upcoming movies also include "Cinderella," "Jungle Book," "Alice In Wonderland 2" and more, according to Business Insider.

With such a full schedule of movies, it's unknown when Disney will have the chance to squeeze in a "Frozen" sequel. It is also unknown of Disney is even considering a sequel in the first place.

But to hold you over 'til then, revisit "Frozen" through its trailer below.
