US States with Fastest Internet Speed; And the Winner is…

Virginia!

Yes, the "Old Dominion" where eight Presidents of the United States came from has the fastest internet in the nation, according to Broadview Network's latest internet speed ranking.

To compile the list, Broadview Networks sourced data from Akamai's State of The Internet report, a quarterly statement that provides information on "many metrics, including connection speeds, attack traffic, network connectivity/availability issues, and IPv6 growth/transition progress, as well as traffic patterns across leading Web properties and digital media providers."

Using Akamai's report, Broadview deduced the average speed of internet in each state. Below are the top 10 states with the best internet speeds:

And in these states, the internet is the slowest:

Broadview Networks also came out with a map (seen above) denoting internet speeds. The green areas show the highest speed and the lighter greens, yellow and red show slower speeds.

In a separate report, it was found that coffee giant Starbucks has the fastest internet when compared to other outlets in the country. WiFi at Starbucks is two times faster than the one offered at McDonald's; and Panera fared the worst when it came to internet speeds.

In February this year, Google - the web giant - announced that it will be expansing in several states with its Google Fiber service.

"Google Fiber is an attempt by Google to build a profitable, stand-alone business. It may not make a huge difference for Google or for the incumbents in the next one, two or three years, but Google is taking the long view and we think in five or more years, it could turn out to be a significant, profitable business for Google and headwind for incumbents," Carlos Kirjner of Bernstein Research wrote in a research report
