Jamie Dornan Can't Escape 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Persona; 'The Fall' Producer Says Role is Confusing

British actor Jamie Dornan rose to international fame through the movie "Fifty Shades of Grey." He played the role of Christian Grey, a handsome billionaire with a sadistic sexual fetish. In the U.K., Dornan plays another sadistic role in the BBC series "The Fall," where he portrays a serial killer who rapes and murders women.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the resemblance of Dornan's two roles has somewhat created a confusion for producers of "The Fall." Alan Cubitt, the show's creator, finally speaks out.

"I don't know if 'Fifty Shades of Grey' has any serious political or intellectual content or not," Cubitt said. "I think it's confused things for me and for 'The Fall' that Jamie chose to do that part."

Cubitt added that he intended "The Fall" to deal with psychopathy and misogyny with the hopes that audiences will come to understand the reason behind such issues, not merely for entertainment.

"I've seen many, many gratuitous TV programs, with all kinds of violence against women just used as a device. My aim was always serious and political and moral," the producer said.

"If I'm honest, I think it's maybe a tad unfortunate for 'The Fall,' because 'The Fall' has a very serious intent behind it," he added. "I don't know about 'Fifty Shades of Grey.'"

In the British series, Dornan plays Paul Spector, a psychopath and serial killer who is being hunted down by a female police offer Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson). "The Fall" has wrapped up its season 2 and is reportedly working on season 3, despite Dornan's busy schedule.

According to the Daily Mail, Dornan and co-star Dakota Johnson are set to resume filming for "Fifty Shades Darker" and "Fifty Shades Freed." The sequels of the film adaptation will be shot back-to-back, with target release dates of Feb. 10, 2017 and Feb. 9, 2018, respectively. The first movie, "Fifty Shades of Grey," is a blockbuster hit, earning $570 million worldwide.
