There are two common house types that you can choose from when buying a new home, namely the townhouse and single-family house respectively. But what should you choose between the two types? There are many factors that come into play when it comes to choosing the right home for you.

  1. Both upfront and long-term costs - when it comes to the costs, the townhouse type has the advantage in this regard. Most townhouses are cheaper than single-family houses, which then results in a cheaper upfront payment.
  2. Requirements for maintenance and upkeep - unlike when owning a townhouse. all upkeep and maintenance costs will be shouldered by you, the homeowner. Additionally, you will be doing all of those chores related to upkeep and maintenance, unlike living in a townhouse.
  3. Space and flexibility concerns - if you need a lot of space and are concerned for your privacy (and for your family members as well), then getting a single-family house is the one for you. Additionally, you can do whatever you want with your home, unlike in most townhouses.
  4. Neighbors and the neighborhood itself - do not choose a townhouse if you don't want to be with people that you don't know or simply don't want to be disturbed by the noises of others. You need to choose instead a single-family home to enjoy the privacy you want and need. However, if you are looking for company while being at home, the townhouse option is for you.

  1. Both have structural differences - a townhouse is simply a part of a group of familiar houses, sharing a common wall in most cases. That is where a single-family house has its advantage since it doesn't need to share with a different building.
  2. Townhouses have their own community - the strong advantage of most townhouses is that many will have their own community of people within it, making it a perfect place for people seeking out new friends and companions.
  3. Overall cost difference - even though it was previously mentioned that townhouses are generally cheaper to live in, do take note that there are still other payments that most townhouse owners must pay on their end. Such fees that you must face would be the monthly HOA fee, among others.
  4. Make sure to carefully choose the right one for you (and your family if applicable) - finally, this will vary depending on your willingness and even your seriousness when it comes to it. Make sure that your need and priorities are met when it comes to choosing your next home.
