Water is one of the things people cannot live without next to food and shelter. However, resources are depleting and conservation should be done. Here are some ways to conserve water and save money on your utility bills.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an average American family of four uses 400 gallons of water per day. Based on these findings, it has been revealed that majority of this usage is used indoors.

In the graph presented, 26.7 percent is used in the toilet. 21.7 percent is being used in the clothes washer, 16.8 percent in the shower, and 15.7 percent in the faucet.

What's surprising is that 13.7 percent of this comes from leaks, which means that you may be paying for your utility bill more than what your family is using. The remaining 5.3 percent is used in other outlets.

Given these figures, there are ways in which you can conserve water and save money as well. First off, fix any leaks at home. A small drip or leak can consume about 20 gallons of water per day; so, find any potential sources of leaks if you do not want to see your money go down the drain with every drip.

Aside from this, Real Simple listed several tips on how you can save water by changing your daily routine. According to the publication, turning the faucet off when brushing your teeth or washing your face can save as much as 2,880 gallons of water per year.

Watering your lawn during the early morning or evening can also save 4,524 gallons of water per year. According to the outlet, watering your lawn during the middle of the day leads to more usage, as evaporation prevents a percentage of water from reaching the roots.

Manually watering your lawn with a hose is also a more cost-effective means of doing so, as this would immediately save you 12,500 gallons of water per year.
