One of Hollywood's heartthrobs, Richard Gere was out in the street of New York City as a homeless man for his upcoming movie, "Time Out Of Mind."

Gere told People last Friday during Los Angeles Confidential event in Beverly Hills, California, "I was out there for the very first shot, 40 minutes plus - no one made eye contact with me," he said.

"I was in character," he said. "I was in one of the busiest places in New York. If I had been Richard Gere there, I wouldn't have lasted 30 seconds."

"It was just I wasn't the movie star and people's projections on what they saw from the body language and where I was in the street filled in these spaces with an erroneous story," he added.

According to Daily Mail, Gere has been developing the film for the last 15 years since he got the script. It took them awhile to make the film to a point that they even have to shoot in the busiest streets of New York. He even told The Wall Street Journal, "We didn't have money to shut down Astor Place or Grand Central, so we had a test day to see if this was going to work, shooting with superlong lenses."

"I was in character and the clothes, and I made my way to a corner across the street from Starbucks in Astor Place and just stood there.

"No one paid any attention. Then I got a little braver and I had a coffee cup and just said 'Can you help me out? Spare change?"

"We did a 45-minute take.

"I made about a buck and a half, but no one even made eye contact when they put money in my cup."

Last April 24, The New York Post reported that "Pretty Woman" actor successfully played his role as a homeless man that a kindhearted woman even gave him a bag of food on the set in Midtown. While he was filming the movie he was able to "fool" New Yorkers and no one even noticed who he really was.

Mizan Rahman, who is a newspaper salesman and happened to be in the area, told the paper that, "He looked like a natural homeless guy. He didn't seem like he was acting. He was putting his hand in the trash. He looked like a real homeless guy finding something."

"Time Out Of Mind" is directed by Oren Moverman. This movie is about a New Yorker who was left with no choice but to enter the shelters since he runs out of housing options. He struggles as he tried to bring his life back and at the same time fix his relationship with his estranged daughter.
