Can We Expect LGBT Characters In Marvel Cinematic Universe?

After the Supreme Court ruling which legalizes same sex marriage all over America, Marvel Cinematic Universe addresses the issue of  the lack of LGBT representation in the company's undertakings, Cinemablend reports.

Marvel films, unlike the comic books, have not represented the LGBT population. Fans have also expressed their clamor for more female and ethically diverse characters from the studio, and some have denounced their seeming exclusion of the gay community.

But that issue will soon be over... well, within the next decade or so.

During the press day of Ant-Man, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, was asked of the probability of adding an LGBT character to their MCU projects, Collider.com reports:

FEIGE: Within the next decade?

Yeah.

FEIGE: I would think so, for sure.

When asked whether the idea was on the drawing board at all, Feige shares that the studio leans on the comics for characters and story inspiration.

"Well in the drawing board going up to 2019 it remains to be seen. The comics always make the path that we get to have the fun of saying, ‘Yeah let's choose this way or let's choose this way' and I think there are a lot of cool things happening in the comics now that-it's usually a five to ten-year cycle between when something happens in the comics and when we can do it in the movie, sometimes a little less, but Civil War is certainly about the 10-year mark.Winter Soldier, I think, was around that time. So we always look at stuff that's happening in the comics and go, ‘Where could we do that?' Sometimes it's sooner, but there's no reason why that couldn't happen in the next decade or sooner."

But with his frim stand on how they traditionally look to the comics for their next big step, Marvel Studios may not go down that route any time soon unless they are given a precedent in the written form first.

Marvel Studios is now one of the most bankable and influential brands in the movie martketplace; they have a global reach which gives them the power to influence in such a wide scope. It would be admirable if the company could one day prominently feature a character from the LGBT community - one to represent that significant part of the population - in a substantial and inspiring role.
