'Bourne Identity 5' Trailer & News: Matt Damon Spotted Preparing For Role

After sitting out the fourth installment of "Bourne," original franchise actor Matt Damon has decided to return for the fifth film.

With a 2016 release date, Damon, was spotted working on to prepare for the action flick. Celebuzz reports that the 44-year-old actor was seen leaving a West Hollywood gym as he gets gets his body ready to play the spy agent/ former assassin once again.

Spotted wearing a a grey shirt and cap, the celebrity's physique shows he's been hitting the gym pretty hard lately.

The news that Matt would be returning to the series was revealed by none-other-than his best buddy, actor Ben Affleck.

"He's going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I've just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness.", said the "Gone Girl" star to E! News on behalf of Damon who stood beside him.

"It'll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out," followed up Damon. "Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that's all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes."

The role of Jason Bourne was inspired by the books of the late Robert Ludlum that centered on the character of Jason Bourne. Damon last played the role in 2007 for "The Bourne Ultimatum" and when he didn't return for the fourth film, Jeremy Renner stepped in for "The Bourne Legacy" in 2012, playing a different protagonist named Aaron Cross.

All three of Ludlum's books were adapted to films with Damon playing the titular role. While Bourne wasn't featured in the fourth film, there were photos and mentions of Bourne in "The Bourne Legacy."

Matt Damon has repeatedly said that he wouldn't return to the franchise with out director Paul Greengrass and personally felt there wasn't anything left to explore in the story.

According to sources, Matt Damon's "Bourne 5" is aiming for a July 15th, 2016 theater release while "The Bourne Legacy" sequel, led by Renner, is still in the works and will arrive at a different, unspecified date. Per Deadline, "the Damon/Greengrass version will be different from the Justin Lin/Renner iteration that is apparently still in the works, but it will be delayed and will have to wait for the original team to go first."

Renner and Lin's Bourne film did great in the box office but didn't garner the same ratings and box office haul as Damon-led films have in the past. Either way, action film fans will be happy to know we may be getting two Bourne films within the next couple of years.
