How to Keep Bugs Away from Your Yard

The spring season is fast approaching and while this season is the best time to tend to your yards, chances are, you are also exposing yourself to bugs that carry a ton of disease-causing microorganisms. While this should not stop you from cleaning your yard, here are some tips for keeping the bugs away and keep you and your family safe.

Your yard is more susceptible for harboring bugs that carry different microorganisms and illnesses. Aside from this, the warmer temperatures in spring often make it a suitable time for bugs to lay eggs and multiply. Realtor.com reports that around 2,060 cases of mosquito-borne West Nile virus disease were reported in 2015.

Aside from this, the U.S. has also been found to have favorable environmental conditions for the mosquito carrying Zika virus. 258 Americans have already been diagnosed with the disease, which only calls for proper prevention.

The publication notes that one of the ways to prevent mosquitoes is by banishing their eggs. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, which means that you should throw out any stagnant or slow-moving water at home.

Houseflies may seem harmless initially, but these bugs often carry microorganisms that can cause diseases such as dysentery, cholera and typhoid fever. The best way to keep them away from your home and your yard is to remove any source of food. This includes garbage cans and leftovers on the sink.

Fleas and ticks can also do more than just make one feel itchy. A number of species are known for harboring diseases such as the plague, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. To get rid of fleas and ticks, make sure to bathe your pets with a flea shampoo in order to keep the ticks away from your home.

You may also need to use some insect repellant spray to keep yourself protected even while outdoors. DIY Natural recommends the use of natural homemade products to protect you from bugs and your skin from chemicals.

A simple mixture of witch hazel, essential oils such as citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree and peppermint along with grapeseed, almond or olive oil will help keep the bugs away from you and your family.
