Home Hacks: Are Napkins Going to Become Extinct in the Next Few Years?

The use of napkins may reportedly become extinct in the next couple of years.

According to The Washington Post, the napkin industry has been having an ongoing downsizing because fewer and fewer people feel the need to use tissue on a daily basis. Marketing intelligence company Mintel also found that at least 56 percent of people revealed that they purchased napkins in the last six months, but at least 86 percent purchase paper towels instead.

For most people, paper napkins may be aptly replaced with paper towels because they can be used for a much longer period of time and may also be recycled. The use of paper towels may help save the environment better than the use of paper napkins.

While speaking with the publication, Georgia-Pacific marketing director Dan Nirenberg couldn't help but blame the American youth of today for this changing trend. Since younger generations prefer eating out than staying at home, it has become more common for people to use paper napkins less and less.

"Millennial eat more on the go, they eat more meals away from home and less around a table. We are trying to figure out how to develop napkin holders that appeal to a younger generation. If you put them in a holder, you are more likely to grab them," Nirenberg said.

Meanwhile, photos from the recent Easter celebrations also showed that more and more people have indeed been using recyclable paper towels than disposable napkins.

At the end of the day, choosing between paper napkin and paper towel is truly a matter of preference. All you have to do is figure out which one works best for your household.

If you are the type of home owner who loves inviting friends over, the use of paper napkins may be ideal because you can just get rid of them afterwards.
