‘Granny Pods’ Allow Elderly Parents to Live Comfortably in the Backyard

Most children live on their own and separate from their parents the moment they reach the legal age. However, there comes a certain point wherein the roles are reversed and it's time for the kids to take care of their parents. If you do not have enough room to spare for your parents to stay at but you still want to keep a close watch on them, perhaps the "Granny Pod" will help make your wish come true.

It has been estimated that about 23 million Americans take care of their elderly parents, House Beautiful reported. While there are a number of nursing homes available in towns and cities, some people still choose to take care of their parents on their own.

It is also more expensive to take them to a nursing home and bringing them in one may also cause guilt for some people. If you have finally come to the decision to let your parents stay at home with you, but you do not have enough room to spare, a Blacksburg, VA company created the "Granny Pod" or the "MEDCottage."

According to the publication, the MEDCottage is a small home, which can be thought of as a portable hospital room. It can be installed in the backyard of your home and features all of the things that would help ensure that your parents are living safely and comfortably.

The Granny Pod has safety features such as defibrillators, first aid supplies, hand railings and lighted floorboards. The MEDCottage also measures about 12 by 24 feet and is connected to the main home's lines. Granny Pods are priced between $85,000 to $125,000.

These figures aren't a bad thing at all. As previously reported here on Realty Today, retirees are often having a hard time spending on home maintenance costs because they weren't able to anticipate and prepare for such expenses.

Knowing that these Granny Pods are specifically made to ensure comfort and safety for your older loved ones will also help give you the peace of mind.
