Home Design: Laminated Floors Can Cause Cancer; Here's What You Need to Know

If you have laminated floors at home, now is the best time to consider changing them.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, such types of flooring can cause cancer among residents. More specifically, some types of laminated floors purchased from Lumber Liquidators have been confirmed to contain formaldehyde. This substance can increase the risk for cancer between six to 30 people for every 100,000L.

According to Elle Decor, "There were earlier reports that cancer risks associated with the company's flooring which gave lower estimates, but the CDC says that the new report, which measures with more accurate ceiling heights, indicates people who have the flooring are three times more likely to get cancer than they originally reported."

Meanwhile, Lumber Liquidators previously came under fire after it was revealed that they use harmful products for their laminated floors. At that time, it was also revealed that at least 100 million square feet of flooring are installed at different homes in the United States yearly.

Healthy home expert Sabine H. Schoenberg, founder of PrimeSitesCT.com and ThisNewHouse.com  recently gave her two cents on the issue.

"It's a brand that's well-known, and it raises the question of what do we look for and who do we trust? It's really a big issue. Be a consumer that's asking questions, whether you're buying flooring, kitchen cabinets or paint. Ask what the glues are made of, make sure they're VOC-free glues," she said.

If you are just about to have flooring installed into your new home, remember that this is the type of flooring that you should avoid. On the other hand, if floorings have already been installed and you believe that they could cause you great harm, immediately have them uninstalled by your carpenter or contractor. Remember, your safety should always come first.
