'Pan' Trailer Released; Hugh Jackman Wows as Blackbeard

The first trailer for "Pan, the newest version of the Peter Pan story, has been released.

The film focuses on the origins of the well-known orphan who was whisked away to the magical island of Neverland.

Comingsoon.net summarized the plot as: "Offering a new take on the origin of the classic characters created by J.M. Barrie, the film follows the story of an orphan who is spirited away to the magical Neverland. There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny-to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan."

The film, directed by Joe Wright using a scriped by Jason Fuchs, starts with a letter penned by Peter's mother, Mary, to the little boy. "My dearest peter, I long for the day that I can come back to you and explain everything. You are extraordinary, more than you can imagine. I promise that you will see me again in this world or another."

In the two-and-a-half minute long footage released by Warner Bros. Pictures, X-Men actor Hugh Jackman steals the show as villainous Blackbeard -- outfitted with heavy armor, a wig over his shaven head.

"Welcome to Neverland," screamed Jackman in the trailer. Blackbeard the pirate and his crew capture young orphans, like Peter Pan (Levi Miller).

"Pan" shows the life of Peter both as an orphan and as a worker in the mines of Neverland. Contrary to the usual depiction of the relationship of Peter Pan and his nemesis Captain Hook, The Daily Mail noted that they weren't always enemies. James Hook, played by actor Garrett Hedlund, is the one that helped Peter escape slavery.

Audiences will see both the courage and trouble encountered by Peter in Neverland.

Towards the end of the trailer, Hugh Jackman looks to Peter -- with eyes filled with vulnerability -- and asks, "Have you come to kill me, Peter?"

To which, the young boy answers, "I don't believe in bedtime stories."

Speaking to The Huffington Post earlier this year, the Australian actor spoke about playing the villain in a much-loved story.
"I'm very excited," said the "Les Miserables" actor.

"I love it. I love the director Joe Wright, I love working with Warner Bros. and I think this is just really exciting. It's a very cool project. And it's wonderful for my kids!" he added.

"Pan" also stars Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, Garrett Hedlund as Hook and Amanda Seyfried.

Pan lands in theaters on July 17, 2015.
