'Zoolander 2' Trailer, Release Date & Cast: Cast Adds Penelope Cruz Sequel

The beautiful Penelope Cruz is reportedly signing on to star with Ben Stiller in sequel, "Zoolander 2."

With the recent success of "Dumb and Dumber To" in the box office, there seems to be a window for over a decade-old comedy sequels. Deadline wrote the Latina actress has just wrapped up filming for Julio Medem's "Ma ma," and has signed a deal to star in the second installment focused on antics of buffoon model Derek Zoolander.

The site went on to note that other original cast members rumored to make a return for the film include Will Ferrell, who plays the sinister Mugatu and Owen Wilson as Hansel, Zoolander's primary rival.

There is no indication of the role that has been pegged for the Oscar-winning actress, but given the beauty of Penelope, it wouldn't be a surprise if she played a fellow model in the franchise.

"Zoolander" was released 13 years ago, back in Sept. 2001 and took $60 million globally. ComingSoon.net noted that the film had the unfortunate timing to have been released during a time when the the nation wasn't "quite ready for laughter."

The film became a considerable success after it was released as a DVD and since then, there have been rumblings of a possible sequel.

"For me and the people who are big fans of the movie, I want to make sure that we're doing it in a way that we felt good about it," said Stiller, 48, to ComingSoon last year. "It takes a lot of elements to come together for that to happen."

Deadline notes that hopefully, the details could be ironed out to include Ben's dad, Jerry Stiller who took on the character of agent Maury Balltein.

In the meantime, Cruz is featured in the upcoming comedy "Grimsby" opposite Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong.

The Spanish actress and wife of actor Javier Bardem, has been linked to two major blockbusters recently. The first being "Pirates of the Caribbean 5," which is said to feature Bardem in addition to the next installment for the Bond series -- possibly as the newest Bond Girl.

Other lovely linked to the iconic spy film include Kate Upton, Cara Delevingne and Rihanna.

Entertainment Weekly noted that Stiller will be taking the reigns as director and producer of the film using a scripted penned by Justin Theroux.
