'The Vampire Diaries' Moves Timeslot, Is Ian Somerhalder Worried?

Starting Jan. 29, 2016, "The Vampire Diaries" will be airing every Friday, 8 p.m. This seemingly simple move sent fans wondering if the end is near for the series. According to Celebrity Dirty Laundry, a Friday night timeslot is usually a "death sentence" for a show.

The CW drama has been enjoying the Thursday night slot since its premiere in 2009. However, season 7 is not doing well in the ratings game. The show has dropped by 33 percent this season alone, and it is reportedly making lead actor Ian Somerhalder worried.

Another major reason The CW could seek to terminate the show is Nina Dobrev's departure. The actress said goodbye to the show on season 6, following her breakup with Somerhalder and the latter's marriage to Nikki Reed. Now, hardcore Stelena fans have seemed to lose their interest, as they can't see Damon (Somerhalder) or Stefan (Paul Wesley) with anyone else.

Any chance of Dobrev's return has been crushed when the actress said that the "TWD" chapter is "closed and bittersweet."

"I don't just want to do things that are the pretty girl with lots of makeup, I want to get into the gritty stuff and get down and dirty and dark and really feed my soul and not my vanity," Dobrev told Interview Magazine last October. "I only want to keep moving up and up in terms of quality and be careful with perception."

However, Zap2It.com argues that there is still hope for the teen-based fantasy series. According to the entertainment site, "TVD" has been sporting a brand new vibe with its current storyline.

"Gone are the awkward, terrible love-triangle moments - they've been replaced by family drama, mythology and fantastic villains," the review states.

"The Vampire Diaries" has attracted the largest audience for The CW among its list of shows. It has received numerous award nominations, winning four People's Choice Awards and several Teen Choice Awards.
