Sons of Anarchy Characters To Return in a Spin-off Series; A Prequel or Not?

Almost a year since the finale of "Sons of Anarchy" Season 7 and now fans see a glimpse of hope that the SOA will return.

Following the cancellation of "The Bastard Executioner," with the last episode airing on Nov. 17, "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter has confirmed that there will be a spin-off series based on Mayans. But instead of a prequel, like many have been assuming, the spin-off series is going to be a contemporary story, which will include characters from "Sons of Anarchy," The Bitbag reports. Sutter took to Twitter and explained, "Mayan Project won't take place in NoCal. That steps on SOA mythology. Although I'd love to find a way to use my brother, [Emilio Rivera]."

As per Entertainment Weekly, "The project focuses on the Mayans - the Oakland-based Hispanic MC gang that had quite a rocky history with SAMCRO across seven seasons. In the original series, the Mayans run heroin factories and are also involved in prostitution. Their cuts bear the legend 'Los Asesinos de Dios' - Assassins of God."

Meanwhile, fans can still hope for a prequel, holding to the words that Sutter gave back in September, when he told Deadline that he has plans to do a prequel, albeit being just a one-off series of 10 or 12 episodes.

Sutter said that the prequel may "begin in Nam and see John Teller and Piney and see how that relationship got created, and bring them back to the States and the obvious external dynamics that were going on with the country and the perception of the war and what an odd kind of perception these vets got when they returned home. And then have it be the development of the club, ending before we start to get too close to some of the mythology that's already been established."

"Sons of Anarchy" is an American crime drama series which premiered on FX in September 2008. It run for seven seasons and final episode was aired on Dec. 9, 2014. It tells the story of Jax Teller, who had difficulty finding the balance between being a dad and an outlaw motorcycle club member. It stars Charlie Hunman, Mark Boone Junior and Katie Sagal.
