South Dakota Ghost Town Listed for $250,000

For just a few $10,000 more than what one would pay for a house, a town can be had in South Dakota.

The town of Swett in South Dakota has been listed for only $250,000. According to CNN Money, the place consists of six acres of land and is located near the Nebraska border. It is 123 miles from Rapid City and is completely abandoned. This is why many people believe that the town is haunted.

Swett is not barren and buyers will also get a house which, of course, is reportedly haunted by its previous owners. There is also an auto repair shop or garage that also doubles as a bar. The place is called Swett Tavern and inside one can find there is a stage and a room that can be used for holding functions and parties. All these are included in the listing. The town also had its own postal service back in the days it was inhabited but it closed down in 1945.

According to the National Association of Realtors, the average prices of homes in the U.S. currently stand at $229,000 which is not far off from the asking price for the town. In South Dakota, home prices jumped by 15 percent over the last year and have reached $172,700.

Meanwhile, in a post by CNBC, it was mentioned that it is not the first time Swett has been made available for purchase. In 2014, the town was listed but for a much higher price tag at $399,000. The new listing price of $250,000 has renewed interest from prospective buyers, according to Stacie Montgomery, the real estate agent in charge of the listing.

She said "Some of the types of individuals who have been interested in the past included people who wanted to be their own mayor, people who wanted to live off-grid, several production companies thinking about reality shows, hunters who wanted to create a hunting lodge, or somebody who wants to own a bar."
