'Star Wars: Battlefront': Breaks EA Records as the 'Largest Digital Launch', Teases Upcoming Free DLC

Previously it was reported that "Star Wars Battlefront" beta, which ended last month, claimed spotlight for being the largest beta in EA's history for having attracted 9 million beta participants across Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC platforms. The shooter game based on the "Star Wars" films was released on Nov. 17 ahead of the upcoming film "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" premieres in theaters worldwide.

Now "Star Wars Battlefront" is in the spotlight again for breaking records. According to Gamespot, its publisher, Electronic Arts, has announced that the game has become known as the "largest digital launch" in the company's history. Currently there is no specific figure regarding the number of downloads, so we still can't see how "Star Wars Battlefront" digital sales record fares against the recently released "Fallout 4." Previously it was reported that SuperData has confirmed that "Fallout 4" sold almost 2 million digital copies within three days following its release.

Even if EA did not share any specific number for the number of digital downloads, "Star Wars Battlefront" seems to be doing pretty well despite mixed reviews. Could GameStop's warning on "Star Wars" game just impulsive? According to Reuters, the world's largest videogame retailer GameStop has claimed that sales of "Star Wars: Battlefront" were weaker than anticipated, causing EA's shares to fall as much as 7 percent last Monday.

GameStop had failed to consider digital downloads, which are becoming more popular than going to the store to physically purchase a copy of a certain game.

The game is also expected to be a popular gift come holidays. Although EA did not comment on GameStop's remark, "Star Wars Battlefront" being the "largest digital launch" in the company's history is proof that GameStop sales cannot predict the game's success.

EA instead is teasing next week's first "Star Wars Battlefront" free DLC. According to Polygon, the DLC called the "Battle of Jakku" will have a connection to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" that is premiering in theaters worldwide next month. The DLC will bring a new mode to the game called "Turning Point" and two new maps. Players can expect more free content to come in the future outside of the upcoming $50 Season Pass next year.
