'Logan's Run' Movie: Simon Kinberg Says Remake Film Is The New 'Hunger Games'

Screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg ("X-Men: Apocalypse," "Deadpool," "The Martian") says that the upcoming "Logan's Run" remake is the new "Hunger Games" for Warner Bros.

In an interview with Collider, the 42-year-old executive producer and screenwriter considered the film as the "granddaddy" of various film adaptations of dystopian or post-apocalyptic novels. He also pointed out that "Logan's Run" has a potential to become a successful franchise similar to "Hunger Games" and "The Maze Runner."

"It’s something that potentially is their Hunger Games kind of franchise that is about a younger audience for a younger audience with a big idea," Kinberg said.

"Logan's Run" revolves around a post-apocalyptic society under the rule of a computer. Citizens are killed by rule-abiding "Sandmen" after reaching the age of 30 in favor of "rebirth." Those who tries to escape their deaths are called "runners." The story is seen in the perspective of Logan, who is a Sandman-turned-Runner.

While praising the original film, Kinberg noted that the upcoming remake will retain some of the elements from the 1976 adaptation. He also said that there will be a balance between the original and his "re-interpretation."

“There’s a lot from the original movie. I love the original movie and I think the storytelling in the original movie is pretty wonderful," Kinberg said. "But yeah there’s a lot from the original film in it, and then there’s a lot of—I guess I would call it reinterpretation from the original film rather than just a whole scale recreation.”

Kinberg also revealed that Warner Bros. already started to prioritize the development and begin the production of the studio's "lucrative" film franchise. Warner Bros. is currently looking for a director who might join Kinberg's project.

Kinberg's connection with the "Logan's Run" film remake was first announced early this July. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kinberg joined the cult film reboot after the countless attempts of writers Alex Garland, Will Beall and Christopher McQuarrie, as well as, directors Bryan Singer and Nicolas Winding. The outlet also reported that "La-la Land" actor Ryan Gosling was previously attached as the lead actor.

The original "Logan's Run" film, which premiered in 1976, is based on William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson's sci-fi novel of the same name. It starred Michael York, Richard Jordan, Jenny Agutter, Roscoe Lee Browne and Farrah Fawcett.
