'Death Note' Live-Action Film Updates: Casts 'the Leftovers' Margaret Qualley as Female Lead; Production Begins in Spring 2016

The Live-Action film adaptation of "Death Note" manga has already found its female lead. Margaret Qualley, the star of "The Leftovers" and daughter of actress Andie MacDowell, has been cast by Warner Bros. as the female lead star of the movie adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's famous manga in 2003.

Spinoff Comic Book Resources says that Margaret Qualley will work with Nat Wolff, who has been earlier casts as the male lead in Warner Bros.' "Death Note" live-action film adaptation. Her role is still kept under wraps. The movie will be helmed by Adam Wingard, famous of his works "The Guest," and "You're Next." The script will be penned by Jeremy Slater, writer of Fantastic Four Script.

According to Deadline, the deal with Margaret Qualley as the lead character of the movie "Death Note" is still in negotiations. According to the report, the story of the live-action film focus on a student who tries to clean up the world from evil people using the notebook, which he discovered that has a supernatural power of killing people whose names are written on it.

Coming Soon says that the "Death Note" live-action film aims to bring to movie theater the 13 volume series of the supernatural manga written by Tsugumi Ohba, and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. This manga has been adapted to an anime series, and a live-action movie in Japan.

According to Anime News Network, director Adam Wingard said that the production of "Death Note" will start in Spring 2016. The executive producers are Brian Witten and Doug Davison, and the film will be produced by the companies of Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka. Niija Kuykendall and Nik Mavinkurve will be overseeing the live-action film adaptation for Warner.

ANN says that Warner Bros. had gotten the rights to "Death Note" from Vertigo Entertainment, which had the rights in 2009. With the previous rights-holder, Vlas and Charles Parlapanides signed up as scriptwriters. Prior to director Adam Wingard, "Shane Black (Iron Man 3) and Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk) were previously linked as directors to the project."
