Canandaigua, New York gives back to brave and outstanding veterans by providing them a low- cost housing project.
According to 13wham.com, the $10.7 million housing development will have a total of 48 apartments as affordable housing while half of these units will be allocated for the veterans and their families who are currently homeless or on the verge of being one.
Jeremy Marshall, director of Veterans' Services in Ontario County, said "That's why seven years ago, they started moving forward with this project to build a housing development to help fill the need for homeless veterans and their families. No veteran who served should ever be homeless."
The rent on these houses will range from $640 to $800 and will be affordable enough for families who are earning 50 percent or below of the area median income. Also, the housing project will have a memorial park for the veterans who will soon be occupying half of the houses.
In a report by wxxinews.org, Veterans Housing CEO and Commissioner Jamie Rubin said "We owe them [veterans] the ability to provide them with support as they get their legs back under them after their service."
The housing development is said to have its own and "separate community building and Veterans Administration service delivery office" while Canandaigua VA Center will also be nearby the housing units.
Federal housing subsidy vouchers for the new families who will be occupying the houses will be provided by the Rochester Housing Authority and the project is expected to be completed in a year.
Different agencies and company partnered to make the project happen. These include "New York State Homes and Community Renewal, the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, Rochester Housing Authority, The Finger Lakes Addictions Counseling & Referral Agency, Inc., Geneva Housing Authority, and the Canandaigua Veterans Administration."
