'Sherlock' News: The Show Returns to Victorian Era, Makes a TV Comeback

"Sherlock" fans just received an early holiday gift. Producer Steven Moffat appeared at the London Comic Con on Saturday, Oct. 24 and announced the show's return to the small screen, as reported by the Daily Mail UK.

"I can exclusively reveal that the long wait for Sherlock will begin again in the late evening of January 1st," Moffat said. He added that for the first time ever, the show will air simultaneously in both the U.K. and the U.S.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will reprise their roles as the mystery-solving duo, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novels. The comeback, happening on New Year's Day, is a one-episode special as a treat for fans who have been patiently waiting its return to television after season three wrapped up last year.

The Jan. 1, 2016 special will be set during the Victorian Era in 19th century London. It will be titled "The Abominable Bride" in reference to "Ricoletti of the Club Foot and his Abominable Wife," a story in Doyle's novels. It will be a standalone special and in no way connected with the series, which is set during modern times.

When asked why they decided to go back to the story's 19th century roots, Moffat said they just wanted to see the characters as written by Doyle.

"We've got, I think you can safely say, the Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson of a generation - we want to see them do it in the proper outfits, just once," he said.

As acquired by Entertainment Weekly, the "Sherlock" special's official description reads, "Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London. Beloved characters Mary Morstan (played by Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) also turn up at 221b Baker Street."

In addition, producers also announced that they are currently working on the show's fourth season. Filming will commence in early 2016.

Meanwhile, check out the short teaser of "The Abominable Bride" below. The special will air on Jan. 1, 2016 on BBC and PBS.
