5 Ways to Sneak Storage into Your Small Space

To have more space, whether one lives in a big or small place, is a common and perpetual wish by many people.

Organizational guru Dorothy Breininger, or more popularly known as Dorothy The Organizer, shares in Zillow that one way to create more space at home. That is, to practice the new trend called minimalism, which entails one's clear and decisive focus on keeping what he/she values the most, and eliminates anything that can or will distract him/her.

The trend requires a rigid review not just of one's purchases, but also of what he/she receives, creates and keeps. This is particularly difficult, especially so in this "material world" where freebies, discounts and other promotions seem to be endless.

The organizing professional goes on to describe that many have turned to "forced" minimalism as they live in tiny homes. She then gives the following tips to make the most of the space available.

1.    Have a vertical orientation

Think vertical for all your spaces at home. By having tall bookcases and shelves, you may be able to address your need for more space. Use them to keep everything - from clothes, projects, craft bins. Your available storage can be doubled by going up.

2.    Use that space behind the door

While it may not be the trendiest design option, installing behind-the-door storage with pockets or hooks to hold almost anything small - fashion accessories, cosmetics, hair dryers, cleaning supplies, and even dog leashes, can be a great space saver.

3.    Load them on wheels

Having a wheeled moving dolly, or storage bins with wheels, will enable you to keep items and get them with much ease. Instead of having them on places where they are hard to reach, for being too high, too low, or in a space too cramped you cannot even move freely, you can have your rolling storage piece sliding out of a closet or cabinet at your height with plenty of room to move in.

4.    Do it the dormer way

Using a shower caddy or a toilet kit to carry your toiletries can be a great idea for your bathroom where it is most difficult to move without enough storage. Similar to a dormer, you and the other people at home may bring these handy storage kits to and from the bathroom. This way, each person can also keep track of his favorite toiletries, and what's even more, the bathroom remains organized.

5.    Live a simple life

In order to have more space, you may start simplifying life. In what Breininger calls as "organizing by your values," you may start by doing a quick list of what you value most in your life--prioritising and eliminating the less important things, and/or commitments and activities that no longer make you happy. By doing this, you will have extra time to further check and organize your home.
