5 Home Trends That Might Not Always Work

Just like in the world of fashion, you also shouldn't blindly follow trends when it comes to home design. While trends are appealing to most people, they each have their pros and cons and are meant to work better in certain conditions.

Here are 5 hot home trends that might not work for you according to Realty Times:

Open floorplans

Homeowners and home interior designers have been taking down walls for the past few years. Open floorplans are indeed still popular and remains a favorite layout for buyers these days. However, these loft-like spaces may have just hit a wall:

"In the last few years, open floorplans have met coolness from tastemakers and buyers alike," said the New York Observer. "Even the 'loftiest' new construction closes off a study or media room, brokers say, while the full complement of sprawling bedrooms, baths and dressing rooms is now de rigeur in luxury construction no matter your floorplan."

Quartz countertops

Like granite, sleek and shiny quartz created such a wave in design popularity lately. However, make sure that you have done your homework before doing this upgrade if you are planning to sell your home. There could be really finicky buyers who discard everything but real stone and want to stick to their traditional taste.

Open shelving

Open your TV to HGTV and you will see open shelving in kitchens everywhere. People especially like it because it creates an open space feel, however, not everyone may find this type of shelving practical. With open shelving, you need to have beautiful plates (since everyone can see them) as they almost serve as decorative display, need to make sure that kids are not around (or else...), and you might have to keep watching out for dust on your bowels and utensils.

Gray everything

Walls, floor, furniture, counters, cabinets, beddings - gray is literally everywhere in the design world. While the hue has its cool chic aura, you need to be careful as it's easy to get overwhelmed and have gray-everything.

"Use grey to decorate your space from top to bottom, and it'll not only be trying too hard to be trendy, it'll also be just bad," said interior designer Maria Killam. "If you walk into a room and the first thing you notice is GREY, that's a room decorated entirely in a trendy neutral. It's too much, and will date very quickly."

Barn doors

Barn doors sure have plenty of bright sides: they are useful, snazzy, and space-saving; but is that really a design look that you are willing to have around for a long time? If you happen to be someone who loves to change things around and often do design facelift for your home, then barn doors that could get you stuck in a time warp in a few years may not be a good option for you.
