Home and Life: The 5 Commandments of Small Space Living

Living in a small space has both advantages and disadvantages. If it is starting to feel cramped or your beginning to get a little claustrophobic, then maybe you're just missing out on the hacks and tricks to happy small space living.

Here are 5 commandments of small space living so you can start happily living small in no time according to Apartment Therapy:

Thou shalt declutter your domicile

Clutter is every household's nightmare, but most especially in small spaces. It can completely take over your home and make it even smaller than it already is. Get the clutter under control by knowing which things you need to keep and give up - no excuses.

Thou shalt get a system to stay organized

Sure you can spend one day of intense cleaning and organizing your space but the real challenge is in maintaining an orderly space. Create an organizing system which will tell where all your possessions have to go - either in the shelves or the bin.

Thou shalt make your furniture do double duty

With a small space, double duty furniture is a MUST. You can't afford to have a sofa, a book shelf, and a closet; so why not consider having storage benches, under-bed boxes, or even a dresser that can double as a nightstand.

Thou shalt be careful with color

Color is an important factor in making a space feel big or small, so be careful when working with it in your small space. If you already have a tiny, cave-like bedroom, you might want to avoid choosing darks as they could make it even more "cozy". When picking a paint color, consider the amount of light, what you'd like to feel in that space, and your room size so you pick the right one.

Thou shalt utilize your wall space

Instead of eating up your already limited floor space, consider using your wall space to set up shelves, cabinets, or even simple pegboard racks to keep your belongings organized.
