Houston Real Estate Update: “Metal Houses” are the New Trend in Buying Homes

Dubbed as 'the most important architectural movement ever born in Houston' by the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune, Metal Houses are now dominating the real estate industry of Houston.

Architect Cameron Anderson competes that Houston has the most number of Metal Houses in the United States.

Anderson said to the Houston Chronicles by phone that "I don't think anywhere else has been compelled to take on the challenges of climate and efficiency that our environment poses as much as Houston, when I fly over Boston or Washington, DC, I can't imagine people there being independently minded enough to take the evidence, draw a conclusion and build a building based on it,"

Anderson has been living in his metal home since 1993 and he said that the technology that goes into the design has become increasingly sophisticated.

"Using the capabilities of the metal-building industry we've been able to create truly custom buildings that have characteristics that no wooden building could match, whether it's ceiling height, length of a room or the efficiency of temperature control," he said. "Wood buildings are constrained by so many factors."

Cameron Armstrong, an award-winning architect who has designed dozens of metal homes in Houston and across the nation also backs up Anderson in his claim that Houston has the most number of metal homes compared to other states.

Armstrong first designed and built his first tin home in 1992.

He told his story to abc13, "It started when my wife assigned me the very important project of designing a house for her. We wanted it to last forever, which is a pretty big goal. So we went through a list of all the materials you could use on a building, and we marked things off. Brick heats it up, wood rots, stucco makes it get moldy," Cameron said. "And we ended up with only one thing left on our list, which was metal. I've been in love with metal ever since."

Armstrong also boast that the "metals have warranties of 20-30 years and you can't get that from any other material, it's just not possible."
