Yankee Derek Jeter Florida Mansion Hit with Tax Hike

Yankee star Derek Jeter might be rethinking his Tampa, Florida mansion after he was asked to pay $265,000 property taxes for the mansion that includes two three-car garages, yacht docks and lifts, seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms - a fourfold increase from what he paid a year ago.

According to the New York Daily News, Jeter paid $68,673 in property tax in 2011, Hillsborough County tax records show. After construction ended on the mansion that that the Yankee player designed specifically to his tastes, his taxes skyrocketed.

"The reason for the change is that in 2011 the property was not complete," the clerk said. "The tax assessment was based on vacant land."

"This person was just paying taxes on the land, but then it became taxes on the land plus the house, plus the dock, the pool, the spa and all the extra luxury features," the clerk said.

The spa was assessed at $21,384 and the elevator was appraised at $48,290.

Jeter, earned $16 million last year, and has been living in Florida since he broke his ankle during the playoffs last season.

Meanwhile, the 38-year-old is sharing his views on climate change, saying that after Hurricane Sandy hit, he focused his attention on global warming.

"It's just something that's gotten so much attention," Jeter told the Columbus Dispatch. "Regardless of how you feel about it, it's something that needs to be addressed because we're seeing more and more natural disasters each year, it seems like. Something has to be causing it."

The New York Yankees star was quick to hedge his remarks by recognizing that not everybody wants to hear political views from celebrity athletes, saying, "I know my place."
