MMA Fighter Monique Bastos Foils Robbery, Subdues Assailant

Years of training in the art of Jiu-Jitsu has really paid off for 125-pound flyweight MMA fighter, Monique Bastos, when two man attacked her and tried to rob her of her cellphone while she was on her way to a training session with friends in Acailandia, Brazil.

"I was going to my jiu-jitsu training when they arrived on a motorcycle and said they wanted our phones," Bastos she said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "I tried to hold my phone, and I realized they were not armed. When they tried to escape, I lifted the rear wheel of the bike and they fell on the ground. The guy who took my phone ran away, but I was able to get the other one."

The assailant must definitely be sorry that they had targeted the Brazilian fighter.  They surely did not have any idea that she has has six professional MMA fights on her record and a few jiu-jitsu matches and Muay Thai bouts according to Yahoo.com.  And now they know that she isn't someone to mess around with.  According to MMAFighting.com one of the attackers got away but Bastos was able to get the other one with a rear-naked choke and took him to the sidewalk where she locked him in a triangle choke, subduing the guy for about 15 minutes until the police showed up.   

Wesley Sousa de Araujo was arrested by the authorities.

Moreover, this wasn't the first time she said she had to defend herself during a robbery.  According to MMAFighting.com, during that other time, the robbers were armed. Speaking of this she said, "I've been through this a few times before, and it's the second time I fought back. There were two guys, and they were using knives, but I was able to use my jiu-jitsu and get my phone back. It's a huge risk, but I did it to defend myself and my friends, so I used what I learned."
