Interior Design Ideas: Tips And Inspiration For Dealing With Low Ceilings

Why it's easy to make a space look good when the ceiling is 14 feet tall. But what about those more humble spaces with ceilings no higher than the standard eight feet?

Don't fret! These interior design ideas will provide you with tips and inspiration for dealing with low ceilings according to Apartment Therapy:

Paint your ceilings and walls the same color

By painting your wall and ceiling the same color, you will blur the transition between the two making the room seem much more spacious. Using white paint for the wall, ceiling and trim will keep a low-ceilinged space from feeling claustrophobic.

Add vertical elements that draw the eye up

There are several stylish vertical elements that you can apply to bring the eyes up and achieve that feeling of a taller ceiling. One is having tall bookcases; this can visually enhance the height of any space. When using curtains, choose a design that goes all the way to the ceiling as it does the trick of making the walls seem taller. If you want to add a lamp, try going for a curving Arco lamp which adds an element of verticality to any room. A gallery wall that is cleverly designed to draw the eye up will also do the trick.

'Weight' the bottom of the room

This may be counterintuitive of what is mentioned above, but clustering objects in the lower portion of a room can actually make the room feel spacious as the eyes are drawn to the expanse wall above. A space will have a much larger feel by keeping furniture and accessories low. You get that airy feel by clustering them in the bottom third of a room.

Embrace it

Instead of feeling down about your not-so-tall ceiling, find the positive of your space and invest in it. You may have a space that is wide but not tall, so just accentuate the positive. Invest on art pieces that enhance the horizontal shape of the room and keep furnishings minimal to make the space anything but cramped. Keep the focus on the space's biggest dimension by sticking to long, low picture rail. Add a tree to enhance the horizontal element and leave the wall mostly free by going for a single than multiple art pieces.
