Home Design Tips: Common Mistakes When It Comes to Designing a Small Space

When you're dealing with a small space, you must take the right actions in order for it to be functional and stylish at the same time. Using every inch of your space wisely is a must so that your home won't feel so small. Here are some tips on how to avoid these common design mistakes for small spaces.

It starts when you buy your furniture. Don't buy pieces that are way too big for your space! One out-of-proportion piece like a sofa will throw the balance out right away. Go for pieces that are multi-functional like a bed that can provide extra storage, or an ottoman that can also be used for storing trinkets. Another idea would be to use an old trunk as a coffee table. Here are more ideas for furniture for small homes.

Another common mistake is breaking up the space too much using dividers like different colored walls or how one layouts their furniture. Given that it's a small space, making it seem like there are multiple "rooms" would just cramp up the space even more. Avoid making your home feel too tight by embracing continuous space and think of it as one big space rather than breaking it into several rooms.

Make the most out of your corners! A good example of this would be your own reading nook which you can create by putting a comfy chair at the edge of the space. Corner shelves for little things like glasses and toiletries would do well in a small room as well. When it comes to installing curtains, extend it all the way up to the ceiling to create the illusion that it's a bigger and higher space.
