Zac Efron's "We Are Your Friends" A Waste of Time?

Zac Efron's coming-of-age movie "We Are Your Friends" seems to disappoint in the U.S. box office and might finish the weekend with a gloomy $2.6 million earnings as against the $10 million projections a few days ago, Variety magazine reported.

In a movie review by Forbes, "We Are Your Friends" is criticized for portraying the character of Sophie and all the girls featured in the film as nothing but sexual objects who dance and sway for men to ogle at. It has also been tagged as a movie that only fans of Zac Efron, EDM music and the whole DJ scene should watch.

The drama is centered on electronic dance music and set in LA's San Fernando Valley. According to The Daily Star, the film revolves around a group of friends whose shared ambition is to make it big in the Hollywood DJ scene. It is director and co-writer Max Joseph's debut movie and he makes a creative effort to energize the film with a bombastic soundtrack and cool dance scenes which will no doubt serve as an excellent introduction to EDM music.

Efron plays the role of a struggling DJ wannabe named Cole. He lives in San Fernando Valley which is just 10 miles from Hollywood where he plans to become famous. He is not alone is his desire to be the next DJ superstar and he has three of his childhood friends buying in on his plans. Best friend Mason would be his manager, Ollie wants to share in the fame as an actor, and Squirrel is the sensitive guy who balances out their group. Actors Jonny Weston, Shiloh Fernandez, and Alex Shaffer play the roles respectively. The rest of the story is quite predictable; Cole meets a well known DJ James Reed (Wes Bentley) who teaches him the ropes. He then gets attracted to Reed's assistant and girlfriend Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski) which would jeopardize his big career break. Ultimately Cole gets his star and the girl.
