The Mumbai Ministry of Shipping is drawing up plans to construct a 'business district' on Mumbai Port Trust land. According to a report from economictimes.indiatimes.com, the edifice would become the tallest commercial building in India.
According to Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Shipping, "It will be a 130 storey building and will house mostly offices along with other amenities. We are working on the plan and it's still in initial stages."
The reason for the project is to monetize the large asset as well as find ways to alleviate the shortage of commercial space in India's financial capital.
The project is forecasted to cost more than 10,000 crore and would be using funds from the pre-booking of the space from public units as well as private firms. Its location would be near Nariman Point and the Fort area in southern Mumbai.
An international consultant is being engaged to prepare the blueprint for the project. According to one senior government official, "A separate master plan for the port would be prepared and this building would be part of it. We are yet to finalize the land parcel and area for this building."
When completed, the building would be the tallest commercial building in India. According to a report from top10wala.in, Mumbai is not without its share of skyscrapers. The city boasts of several ones, such as the Imperial Towers I and II, measuring 254 meters and has 61 floors. The tower is primarily used as residences.
The city also has the Ahuja Towers, which measures 250 meters tall and has 53 floors. Completed in 2014, this is again a residential edifice in the middle of Mumbai Central Business District. Rounding out the top five are The World Crest which measures 223 meters with 57 floors, also a residential project, the Lodha Bellissimo A, B and C each measuring 222 meters with 53 floors each project. The fifth tallest is Kohinoor Square with 203 meters and has 52 floors for mixed residential and commercial use.
