Microsoft CEO Announces 8000 Job Cuts

Microsoft has been experiencing losses as of recently, and in a heartfelt company email - Microsoft's Satya Nadella thanked all employees  while delivering the job cuts in the softest way possible.

According to an article on wired.com, the company's phone business development field will be getting a cut of 7,800  of these positions globally - much to the chagrin of those who would be laid off. This move by Nadella was in addition to the other 18,000 jobs that he had planned to cut also last year.  The total number of all these cuts make up around 1/5th of Microsoft's total headcount worldwide.

He also announced Stephen Elop's departure from the company. Elop was also a top ranking executive for Microsoft who ran the device's unit in the company, according to the same article.

In reference to the news announcement from Microsoft's press center on news.microsoft.com,  Nadella also wrote about the impending changes and eventual developments or growths that will be occuring within the new Microsoft.  "We plan to narrow our focus to three customer segments where we can make unique contributions and where we can differentiate through the combination of our hardware and software. We'll bring business customers the best management, security and productivity experiences they need; value phone buyers the communications services they want; and Windows fans the flagship devices they'll love,"  he says.

Aside from the phone devices unit that would be experiencing these changes, the announcement also centered on two other areas: mapping and advertising. Nadella mentioned that the company will still continue to "source base mapping data and imagery from partners". He reasons that these partnerships will allow them to focus on the delivery of their map products, especially Bing Maps and Bing Maps for Enterprise APIs. As for the advertising side of business, the company is partnering with AppNexus and AOL for search technology, as mentioned in the same announcement.
