How To Decorate A Living Room And Kitchen Sharing One Space; Designers Tell All

Interior design is not for everybody - those interior design ideas just come rushing in for some while others just don't have the slightest clue. Thanks to reputable designers in the interior design industry who offer their years of expertise to teach us different tips and tricks for our home design dilemmas - like how to decorate a living room and kitchen when there is no distinction between the two spaces.

Here are living room and kitchen combo design suggestions by some of the interior design industry's well-respected designers as listed by Architectural Digest:

HUGH NEWELL JACOBSEN

For Hugh, one way to decorate a living room and do kitchen design altogether is by placing all seating and coffee tables in the centre of two-thirds of the space. He recommends to have a buffet table and that it should be the same length as the sofa that will go against that refractory table.

MARTYN BULLARD

For Martyn, decorating an undefined living/dining area should start with identifying the end of the room dedicated for dining. An interior design tip he suggests is to direct the dining area towards the windows to clearly define the space as well as making the dining experience more special.

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN

The key is separating the spaces according to Timothy - he advises using area rugs (even for wall-to-wall carpeted floors) or installing a light fixture to right above the dining table to help identify the area.

GEOFFREY BRADFIELD

Geoffrey thinks that a successful ploy to apply for open-plan spaces is creating islands with area rugs for distinction, similar to Timothy's interior design ideas.

ELLIE CULLMAN

Create a floor plan where the living and dining spaces are adjacent to each other and visually separate them using two rugs to make the spaces distinct and spacious. However, if the function truly overlaps, treat it as one space with one big rug so the areas don't feel small. Either way, it would help to stick to similar palette and materials when designing both areas.

PAUL WISEMAN

Pass the dining room as a library alcove decorated with books, lamps, etc, which can easily be converted to a dining room that could also pass as a large luxurious living room.

Sure that when it comes to interior design ideas, picking the brains of these sought-after interior designers can give us professional insights we never would have thought of.
