Nina Dobrev will not be coming back to "The Vampire Diaries," but Julie Plec, the series' executive producer, explained that there's more to come, and that the new season is worth looking forward to, like the reuniting of the Salvatore brothers with their mother.
In the previous "The Vampire Diaries" season, Lily, the mother of the Salvatore brothers, Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley), was resurrected in the end part of season 6. However, Lily (played by Annie Wersching), is not alone. She has brought her friends, who are also vampires, that possess witch powers.
Plec explained that a conflict will arise between Lily's biological sons and the new family in season 7.
"Damon and Stefan are dealing with the fact that their mother, who essentially abandoned them, has shown up in their hometown with a group of people that she calls her new family and that she calls her children," the executive producer shared with Buddy TV.
"It will be incredibly, emotionally frustrating," she continued.
The "The Vampire Diaries" producer further explained that the conflict will teach the characters a lesson about handling relationships with one another, the relationship that the brothers have always wished to share with their mother. In the end, they will be caught in the middle of whether to make amends with her or decide to just take her down.
Alaric, who is portrayed by Matthew Davis, will also be one of the most interesting characters in the upcoming series. The loss of his unborn child and new bride in season 6 will make him different in season 7.
When Plec was asked about the relationship between Damon and Bonnie (played by Kat Graham), she replied that both will nurture a mature kind of friendship. This will be surprising given the fact that both have little to no respect for each other.
Meanwhile, Caroline (portrayed by Candice Accola) will attempt to regain full control of what she really wants, though Stefan was vocal that he will wait for her Enstarz reported.
