How To Create The Illusion Of More Space In Your Home

Do you want to make your space look bigger than it actually is? "Opening up" your room doesn't always mean tearing down walls or doing major renovations, though they could greatly help too.

But if you want easy tricks that don't require breaking the bank, Apartment Therapy suggests you do these  steps to create the illusion of more space in your home:

Choose monochromatic colors

Using monochromatic colors allow the eye to easily move around the room without being interrupted by any strong color. Just go for different color values to add depth to the space and make it more interesting.

Go with glass

When renovating your bathroom, choose to use glass instead of other material. For instance, go for a glass shower door instead of a shower curtain that would only cause a visual barrier instead of letting your eyes take in the entirety of space. Also, instead of wooden doors, go for those designs with glass panels such as a French door.

Hang mirrors

When light is reflected around the room, it makes it more open and creates that illusion of a bigger space. The best way to do that is by having mirrors around the space  - either individual mirrors or those that go from floor to ceiling.

Choose the right furniture

Choose furniture that have lesser visual weight such as pieces with raised legs other than a bulky solid one directly above the floor. You could also go for clear materials that allow the eye to take in more space visually instead of blocking colors.

Unify your flooring

As much as possible, use similar flooring in the different areas of your house; if you use hardwood in the living room, then don't use linoleum in the kitchen. You could always use carpets or rugs to add that extra edge and you may want to avoid patterned ones. Solid, continuous looking flooring creates more visual space.

Lower your lighting

Avoid creating shadows by putting light at the floor, table and eye level. A continuous lighting creates more space and you can achieve that by proper lighting placement and hanging any pendant lamp as low as possible.

Use paint strategically

Avoid using contrasting colors on your wall and flooring - you need to avoid making that line where they meet noticeable. You can also make the wall look taller by continuing the wall color onto the ceiling - it will achieve that high-ceiling effect.
