The One Thing That's Missing In A Space That Doesn't Feel Right

Are you decorating a room and feel like after arranging all the furniture, hanging the art in, and setting up the vignettes, that something is still not quite right? Like, something is missing, or that it just isn't working? Then maybe it's missing this powerful design tool - a focal point! Apartment Therapy discusses this design key element and why it is important.

What is a focal point?

In designing sense, a focal point is an area or spot in a room that catches the eyes first. It is an element that, if all objects in the room would make noise, it would be the loudest. A focal point is key to making a room feel cohesive and sophisticated, as well as set the whole tone of the space.

Why your room might need one

It is not always necessary to create a focal point in a room; a lot of houses still look pulled together without the application of this design principle. A focal point would be necessary for rooms that are looking too busy or cluttered. Look around the room; if your eyes don't pick an area to look at longer, then the room probably is lacking a focal point. If a room feels boring, then it could also be because of a lack of this element.

How to find your focal point

There are many ways to identify the focal point in a room. One way is to step out of the room, walk back in, and determine the area that caught your eye first. You can also take a photo of the room and see what jumps out the most. Pick an architectural element that really grabs the attention or you can also decide for and create the focal point of the room.

Creating a focal point in a room will make the space look more put together, as well enhance the idea of the room and its purpose. Try it and see how much difference it will make to the look and feel of your space.
