Following Patrick Dempsey's exit, there have been reports that new cast members will be introduced and new storylines will be developed. Some fans are speculating that this could be Shonda Rhimes' and ABC's way of ensuring audiences will continue to watch the series despite his absence.
According to Christian Today, one major storyline twist will involve April Kepner (Sarah Drew) and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams). In Season 12, April and Jackson's son Samuel passed away just a few hours after he was born. This has led the former to become much stronger and less emotional.
The actress previously said during an interview that indeed, April will make big decisions in Season 12. Whether or not she will choose to end her marriage with Jackson is something fans needs to watch out for in the upcoming installment.
Meanwhile, Vine Report noted that Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) may rekindle their romance in Season 12. In a previous interview, Capshaw hinted on the possibility. However, at the same time, she also teased that Callie and Arizona may just become good friends who will support each other's personal decisions.
In other news, fans are still awaiting the future of Ellen Pompeo's character Meredith Grey. There are some speculations that Meredith will continue to deal with the death of Derek and this could put her health in jeopardy.
A few years back, it was revealed that Meredith also had the Alzheimer's gene. Now there are rumors that this storyline will be addressed now that Derek is no longer around. Some speculations also suggest that Meredith may die towards the end of Season 12, that is if Rhimes decides to make another bold move for the sake of the series.
