House Design Tips: Goodbye Backyard Pool, Hello Pond, 'The New Pool in Town'

Beat the summer heat by dipping yourself in the cold swimming pond. Yes, you read it right: pond, not pool.

When it comes to house designs, the backyard pool is dead because the "new pool in town" is actually a pond, Business Insider said. With all the water concerns originating from the drought being experienced in California, the better option now is reportedly to build a swimming pond rather than a swimming pool. While a man-made pond still needs water like the swimming pool, the pond is less water-consuming in the long run.

"You're building a natural ecosystem that basically takes care of itself. Monitor chlorine? Nope. Balance the pH? Relax. The most you'll have to do is skim fallen leaves off the surface," said House Logic. "There aren't any filters to monitor either, so you don't have change out anything. Bonus: No electricity needed to run the filter system," the site added.

Furthermore, Business Insider said that ponds are enviornment-friendly and will protect homeowners from "#DroughtShaming." The smell of chlorine and how your skin feels after swimming in a chlorinated water is also one of the factors to consider on why you should let go of a swimming pool for a pond.

Wisconsin Lake & Pond Resource also pointed out the other benefits of having a pond by your doorstep. According to its article, swimming ponds enhance the look, enjoyment and value of any residence. Ponds have an astounding ability to enhance visual appeal, it said. It reportedly provides a very nice aesthetic appeal to any home.

Enhancing the beauty of your home by building a pond in your backyard also means increasing its value. Wisconsin Lake & Pond Resource said that with the right builder, a pond can increase the value of your home. The site added that you can use a pond either for swimming or fishing, which a regular swimming pool cannot offer.

Meanwhile, according to Aqua Magazine, a homeowner must identify his purpose of building a pond first. He must decide whether it is going to be used primarily for swimming or not. The article pointed out that if a pond will be used for swimming, it still needs to comply with the design, permit, and construction of current and accepted swimming pool standards.

If it is not meant for swimming but is large enough to be a swimming pond, the said standards are reportedly not applicable. Ponds that are created for visual appreciation and to grow plants and fish do not need to follow swimming pool requirements.
