'Top Gun 2' Update: Tom Cruise to Return? Find Out What a Producer Said About the Sequel and Maverick

It's confirmed-Top Gun is lock and loaded, and is returning to the big screen, with strengthening rumors that Tom Cruise will be back as Maverick.

The rumored sequel to the 1986 box office action film began in 2010, while in 2012, Cruise and Top Gun director Tony Scott were reportedly scouting for locations. However, the talks died down in August of that year as Scott passed away at 68.

After more than two years, the movie sequel resurfaces in the public's eyes. In fact, Skydance CEO David Ellison and CCO Dana Goldberg confirmed during a press day for Terminator Genisys in Berlin that Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) is already writing the screenplay.

"He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today," Ellison said.

Aside from the ongoing script, Ellison and Goldberg also hinted Cruise's return.

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," he continued. "It is I don't think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak."

Meanwhile, super producer Jerry Bruckheimer also laid down cookie crumbs of the possible story during his talk about his new book "Jerry Bruckheimer: When Lightning Strikes, Four Decades of Filmmaking" in HuffPost Live.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," Bruckheimer said. "It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture."

However, as of now, there is still no director announced.
