'Pacific Rim' 2 Cast & Plot News: Is Charlie Hunnam Not Coming Back?

Director Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed that "Pacific Rim 2" is now in the works after the first film made $411 million in the international box office. According to him, the second installment of the film will be set a few years after the Jaeger pilots have defeated the Kaijus. The main focus of the film will reportedly be about "The Drift."

According to Del Toro, he is pressured to make "Pacific Rim 2" a massive hit just like the first movie. However, he revealed that the second installment will be different from the first in the sense that it will focus on the Kaijus rather than the Jaeger pilots. He added that Legendary Pictures gave him the go signal to work with the screenplay, and he and Travis Beacham are already working on it.

It is believed that Charlie Day and Hermann Gottlieb are going to reprise their roles as Dr. Newton Geiszler and Gottlieb in the second film, as Del Toro revealed that he has a soft spot for these characters. However, rumors abound that Charlie Hunnam may not be back as Raleigh in "Pacific Rim 2."

In an interview with International Business Times, Del Toro addressed this rumor about the "Sons of Anarchy" star. He said, "We are taking the characters into a completely different journey this time because Raleigh for me solved his problem the minute he was able to go full circle and save Mako by sacrificing himself, which is what he couldn't do with his brother. He's not on that journey anymore; he's on a new journey."

There are also reports that Charlie Hunnam still hasn't signed the contract for the movie yet. Movie Pilot reported that if the actor won't sign the contract, his character Raleigh might die like his brother in the first movie.

"Pacific Rim 2" is set to hit theaters on August 4, 2017.
