Moving from one home to another can be a big task but there are things that you can do to make the whole process easier. Whether its moving to a dorm during college, renting an apartment closer to work or transferring to your dream home, going through the process without a plan can bring about a significant amounts of stress.

Before packing the boxes and calling the movers, here is a list of packing tips that everyone should keep in mind: 

1.  Get a head start

Lifehack notes that it all begins with a good plan. Getting a head start is winning half the battle when it comes to moving. Get organized as early as three months before the big day. Create a moving checklist and work around a do-able timeline. Keep in mind that there are always going to be unforeseen circumstances so plan in advance to allow yourself plenty of time get everything done. 

2.  Get rid of the junk

Secondly, moving will be easier if you only bring the essentials. Go through your closet and clean out the junk; it will give you a fresh start and lots more space in your new residence. Give yourself time to sort out your things and decide what you will need, what can be given away and what needs to go to the trash. 

3.  Do Your Research

You will need to carefully consider what you will bring and what may require special handling. For those hiring a moving company, carefully evaluate services offered and if you'll be doing it on your own, take time to learn how to pack everything properly including the special care needed when handling appliances, electronics,  flatware and other breakables. This will minimize potential damages that can pile up if packing is done incorrectly. 

Learn about the different types of boxes to use and choose strong ones, especially for heavier items. Use smaller boxes for books and put the lighter items in more spacious boxes. Alternatively, you can mix heavy and light items in one box. Just make sure to put the heavier stuff at the bottom. 

4.  Prepare all the supplies you need

Ensure that you have all the supplies you need before you start packing. Create a checklist of packing materials you need, these include cardboard boxes, labels, permanent markers, packaging tape, markers and more. Having the right labels

Put all items from one room together in their designated boxes as this would make it easier for you to unpack and organize them later.
