‘Avengers 2: Age of Ultron’ Ending & Review: Director Joss Whedon Wanted Spider-Man & Captain Marvel to Cameo?

"Avengers 2: Age of Ultron" was reportedly supposed to be filled with cameos and special sequences that did not make it to the final cut. Examples of such special cuts were an alleged appearance from Captain Marvel near the end of the film and Loki's special dream sequence.

To appease the fans who want to know more about these special cuts, director Joss Whedon has spoken with Empire and revealed that he actually wanted to squeeze in a Spider-Man cameo at the end. Sadly, the reference to the friendly neighborhood superhero as well as the other cameos that he originally wanted never came to pass.

"I wanted all those people," Whedon admitted. "I said, 'It would be great if we could just add a few more, if we could have a Captain Marvel there.' And they talked about it."

"I was, like, 'And Spider-Man - we could do that, too,'" he added. "Sony had approached us during the first movie about a little integration. So, I would have put both of them in. But, neither of the deals was made. And then, there were, like, 'We are making a Captain Marvel movie and we have got Spider-Man as a property.' And, I am, like, 'I have already locked my film, you f*****s! Thanks for nothing.'"

Thankfully, the Captain Marvel cameo appearance was allegedly included in the Deleted Scenes clip in the film's Blu-Ray version, according to We Got This Covered.

Marvel Studios had actually given an explanation why they opted to remove Captain Marvel's part and forego Spider-Man's cameo. "It would have done that character a disservice to meet her fully formed - in a costume - and part of the Avengers already when 99% of the audience would go, 'Who is that?'" Marvel boss Kevin Feige said, according to Birth Movies Death.

As for Spider-Man, everything went down to bad timing. The Sony Pictures and Marvel deal for rights to "Spider-Man" was officially announced in February. Although it was still possible to do some additional shooting in time for the May release of "Avengers 2: Age of Ultron," they did not want to make a major change that late, according to Slash Film.

Although fans would have loved to see Spider-Man swing by, some reports indicated that it was probably better for the young web-slinger to save his introduction until he finally has a chance to shine. After all, he is going to debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, in May 6, 2016's "Captain America 3: Civil War" before moving on to his solo feature in July 28, 2017.
