'Godzilla 2016' Release Date & Update: Teaser Image Revealed, Japanese Directors Picked for Film Reboot

Fans of "Godzilla" would soon see the Japanese monster back on the big screen. Word is out that the Asian original has gone back to its roots and would get another reboot from two Japanese directors.

According to an article in Coming Soon, the film is getting the Japanese treatment from the company which first brought it to life. Toho Co., Ltd confirmed the news and announced that the firm has put on board two directors that would work on the project.

Shinji Higuch and Hideaki Anno have been chosen to helm the upcoming movie. The two have worked together previously and are known for the work they did in "Neon Genesis Evangelion"m as well as the "Attack on Titan."

Warner Bros. came out with a "Godzilla" film in 2014, which enjoyed tremendous success. This has sparked the interest of Toho to revive the famous monster from Japanese pop culture.

"Ever since Hollywood announced that 'Godzilla' was to be resurrected, the expectation for another Japanese Godzilla grew. And if we were to newly produce, we looked into Japanese creators who were the most knowledgeable and who had the most passion for Godzilla," stated Toho to Variety.

The statement further added, "Their drive to take on such new challenges was exactly what we all had been inspired by."

Anno is no stranger to directing animated films. He had been part of the animated film "Nausicaa in the Valley of Wind" produced by Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli. He has also directed other anime series such as "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water" and "Gunbuster."

Meanwhile, Higuchi is known for his directorial work in "Lorelei: The Witch of The Pacific Ocean", as well as "The Sinking of Japan."

The duo would work hand in hand with the upcoming "Godzilla" film with Higuchi in charge of the visual effects and Anno on the screenplay.

Production for the upcoming film is expected to begin this 2015. The company behind the movie has revealed that the making of the new film has been upgraded from man-in-costume to computer graphics technology to give it a more realistic approach.

Toho has also released a teaser image of the foot of the new "Godzilla"

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. is still set to come out with a sequel to its 2014 remake of the Japanese monster. The second film is slated for a June 8, 2018 release in collaboration with Legendary Pictures.
